Optimum Nutrition Product Reviews

Nutrition Rehabilitation Unit (NRU), Chitipa District Hospital by Anne Li

"Ornish earned his reputation with his work on the management of atherosclerosis with extremely low fat vegetarian diets. But like predecessor Nathan Pritikin, Ornish's recommendations are not suitable for most people. The few small studies claimed to prove the worth of his work have also been questioned on scientific grounds. Dr. Richard Pasternak, director of preventive cardiology at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, has said that "There's virtually no science" in them. Dr. Robert Eckel, Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver and chairman of the nutrition committee of the American Heart Association also expressed serious doubts, as did Dr. Frank Sacks, a nutrition professor at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Sacks, in trying to replicate Dr. Ornish's results with a grant from the NIH, found that it was difficult to recruit patients and few could stick with the program. Fortunately, Ornish's program has been superseded by more effective forms of managing elevated blood cholesterol and the discovery of other treatable risk factors.

Ornish began as a devotee of an Indian guru, Sri Swami Satchidananda. He became involved with the Swami after dropping out of Rice University in 1972 in a state of suicidal depression. It was apparently during this time that he formed his beliefs about the importance of a vegetarian diet with no added salt, sugar or fat and no caffeine combined with meditation, yoga and exercise.

Rather than teaching doctors about nutrition, I think we’d be better served by teaching patients that you don’t go to a mechanic for advice on how to design a car, and you don’t go to a car designer to fix your flat tire.

Doctors have always been among the worst sources for information on nutrition and fitness, and the ones who did learn something in school are among the worst. Both fields are evolving rapidly, and a doctor repeating the information he learned 20 years ago will tell you to eat more grains, exercise at a moderate pace, avoid alcohol, etc — all things that newer research have shown to be wrong.

Nutrition and fitness are a form of technology, evolving just as quickly as your computer. Listening to a doctor repeat knowledge he learned in the 1980s is like buying a Commodore 64 when you need to get online.

I fight, so I’m injured a lot, which requires occasional visits to doctors. There is nothing worse than a doctor who tries to follow up a torn tendon with life advice (after the perennial advice of “rest”) that is clearly wrong. His job is to fix me, not coach me on a healthy lifestyle.

If you combine a doctor’s ignorance with most doctors’ learned arrogance, what you get is a recipe for a fountain of wrongness that spews bad knowledge into the society at large. That won’t change with a few courses. But it might if we could just deflate their societal status a little down to what they are: a body version of a car mechanic.

YORK WEIGHT BENCH by York Weight Bench

Many people are familiar with pecs as the slang term for chest. Pecs are short for Pectoralis Major and they represent a large part of your chest muscles, and more specifically, they are your upper chest muscles. To get muscle tone and muscle definition, we advocate the following exercises: dumbbell flies, cable flies, cable crossovers, and pec deck machine exercises. Below, we discuss how you can grow your upper chest area, namely by doing bench press exercises.

The Flat Bench Press

Want to strengthen and increase the size of your pecs? Then the flat bench press is probably your best choice. You can develop your front shoulder muscles with the bench press, too. Bench presses are done with a barbell, just as described below.

1. To hold a barbell, use an overhand grip and place your hands apart from each other so the distance between your hands is about a shoulder span. Do all this while lying on a flat bench.

2. From off the rack, lift the barbell straight in the air until your arms form straight lines.

3. Lower the barbell slowly while inhaling. however, don't let it bounce off your chest.

4. Pause briefly. Push the barbell back up to the extended position. Do not allow the barbell to move too much. This will cause the loss of control.

5. Repeat the same steps as above once you've ended the movement by exhaling.

Different Variations of the Bench Press

The Decline Bench Press is performed on benches that are inclined. 20 to 40 degrees of inclination is ideal. Your best option to increase the volume and definition of your lower pectoral muscles is the Decline Bench Press, hands down.

You can perform the Incline Bench Press on any bench that is inclined from 45 to 60 degrees. The best chest exercise to do, if you want to tone and increase the size of your upper pectorals, is undoubtedly this type of bench press. Also, it will work on your anterior deltoid muscles.

The Close-grip Bench press is another variation of the Bench Press which is done the same way as the Flat Bench press, without such a large distance in between the hands. Only 12 inches of space between both hands is necessary. This type develops your tricep muscles and your pecs.

If getting the best chest exercise while building muscle mass is your goal, then You'll want to do bench press exercises. Keep in mind that even though we've suggested barbells for these exercises, dumbbells will also give amazing results.

Tips for Bench Pressing

Avoid bouncing the barbell if its at the lowest level, because this will cause you to get hurt. Avoid letting the barbell move too much in front or in back because this may result in a loss of control of the barbell. When doing free weight bench presses, make sure someone is spotting you, because even though bench presses are the best chest exercises, they can sometimes be dangerous.

Yankees What Happened To Our Don?

  • Yankees 10, Mariners 0: CC Sabathia hasn't lost at Yankee Stadium in his last 15 regular-season decisions -- he did lose Game 1 of the World Series last year -- and he extended that streak with ease Sunday. Rain prevented him from working into the seventh inning, but it didn't stop Robinson Cano from hitting a grand slam and knocking in a career-high six runs. The Yankees now have 10 grand slams this season. That matches a franchise mark from 1987, when Don Mattingly had six himself. The Yankees are now 12-0 without Alex Rodriguez this season. Rodriguez is on the disabled list for almost another two weeks, so if the Yankees can keep that up, they can probably all but wrap up a playoff spot. Don't hold your breath, though.

  • Pirates 2, Mets 1: Johan Santana has now thrown three straight complete games. Unfortunately, he's lost the last two of them. Zach Duke outdueled his Mets counterpart as the Pirates avoided a sweep. Jose Tabata -- an ex-Yankees prospect -- and ex-Met Lastings Milledge homered for the Pirates runs. A Carlos Beltran sacrifice fly accounted for the Mets run.

If Joe Girardi decides he had enough of the Yankees experience and goes to the Cubs, the Yankees can forget about Don Mattingly managing them.

The Dodgers hired Mattingly as their new manager after Joe Torre announced he won't return as the Dodger manager next year.

This is too bad. The Yankees need a manager who appreciates the game. They need a manager who won't overmanage. They need a manager who will not have an ego on gamedays.

Mattingly would fit the bill. Please do not talk about his lack of experience. Any manager can manage a team with the payroll the Yankees have.

If a manager has plenty of talent to work with he can get by. We saw that with Girardi last year.

The Yankees manager made dubious decisions when it came to pitching in October. Fortunately for him, his hitters bailed him out.

It also helped that CC Sabathia, AJ Burnett, and Andy Pettitte managed to win games in October.

If Girardi was not blessed with talent he would just be another manager and nothing more.

Want to know how players look good? Look back to Boston's manager Terry Francona. Philadelphia sports fans perceived him as a dumb manager when he lost in Philly. Yet he is now viewed as a great manager because he won two championships in Boston.

Does a manager make that much of a difference? All a manager can do is have his team sharp when the game begins.

Other than that, it comes down to what the players do within the white lines.

There is a good reason the Yankees are not in a rush to sign Girardi to an extension. They know he is replaceable. If anything, he should be begging to stay on rather than using the Cubs as leverage.

That would be a bad strategy on Girardi's part, especially if the Yankees miss out on the playoffs for the second time in three years under his stewardship. Don't laugh at that prospect.

The Yankees are nicked up with injuries. Nick Swisher and Brett Gardner can't seem to move, Mark Teixiera's foot limits his ability to hit, and Alex Rodriguez has not been productive thanks to a hip issue.

Their hitters don't scare elite pitchers. The Yankees strike out often these days at a high ratio.

Outside of CC Sabathia, no one in the rotation scares anyone. The Yankees are banking on Andy Pettitte, but what if he can't be good enough after being activated from the disabled list?

The schedule does the team no favors. The Orioles, Rays, Blue Jays, and the Red Sox know what it takes to beat the Yankees this year.

With the Red Sox six games out in the division and six 1/2 games out for the wild card, they can make a run of their own. At this point, there's more trust on the Red Sox than the Yankees to make the playoffs.

What's alarming is Girardi is not responding to the situation well. He has been moody with reporters. He talked about how the pennant race is work. He has had a quick hook with the pitchers if they screw up.

Is this want the Yankees want to see from their leader?

This type of attitude rubs off on the players. Girardi was able to relax last year because his players were never hurt and they played great all year.

When there is first sign of trouble, the Yankees manager is tense.

It is not going to get any better next year. The Rays will take a step back with defections, but the Orioles, Blue Jays, and the Red Sox are not going anywhere. Expect those three teams to improve.

How will Girardi handle it? Do the Yankees trust him to lead? This year's experience will speak volumes about him.

We also question Girardi's bullpen use. It's nice he wants to rest his relievers, but this is September. Every game is important. If the Yankees lose these games, the Red Sox will gain more games.

The Yankees should be trying to win these games. The more they win, they can exterminate the Rays. Then, they can go rest their players.

That's how a team should do it. For Girardi to think the wild-card spot is a safety net, that's wrong. Nothing is guaranteed.

If this strategy costs his team the postseason, the Yankees should fire him outright.

Does anyone think Mattingly would do this? Don't think so. Rest assured, he would play to win the game and worry about the other stuff when he has to.

Plus, he would embrace the games in September instead of pouting like a spoiled brat.

Mattingly would have been a better choice to manage the Yankees when the team decided to end their relationship with Torre. He would have been a great choice to take over for Girardi.

It is the Yankees' loss.

They are stuck with Girardi or whoever for better or for worse.

School: Back to school shopping ripoffs?

Back To School 2009 by Patrick Ng

Save money on back to school supplies this year to keep yourself on budget and allow you to have extra spending money for extra-curricular activities. Many students are forced to go back to school on a budget and are looking for the best back to school tips this year. When returning to school this year, keep the following tips and secrets to saving money in your back pocket to keep more money in your wallet.

1. If returning to college, team up with your roommate and complete a "ToDorm" Checklist at Kohls.com. To save money when returning to college, coordinate with your roommate to purchase items for your dorm room together. You can also print the list and pass it around to family who want to help you out!

2. My daughter wears uniforms to school and we are always looking for ways to save money on those back to school items. Some of the parents get together and plan a "swap" sale each year at the end of school. This is a great way to trade out uniforms for a new size.

3. If you are purchasing textbooks, try online retailers to save money. I went back to college and found that buying my books online at Amazon, EBay, TextBooks.com and eCampus.com is much cheaper than purchasing textbooks at the campus bookstore. TIP: buy used books - they often have great notes in them too!

4. When purchasing school supplies, contact several families in your child's class. Purchasing school supplies in bulk and splitting them up between students will save money. Try DollarDays or Geddes for bulk school supplies.

5. If your child eats lunch everyday at school, consider packing his or her lunch. Packed lunches can save you money and be more nutritious and healthy than school lunches.

6. Our state has a "tax-free" shopping weekend that is designed for back to school shopping. Take advantage of this weekend to buy large items such as laptops, computers, dorm furniture and clothing to maximize your savings.

7. Students going to college should take advantage of garage sales and yard sales. They can pick up great used furniture and small appliances for their dorm rooms for practically nothing.

8. Shop outlet malls and shopping centers. Most outlet malls offer special back to school shopping days where they offer great discounts on clothing, back to school supplies and other school items.

9. Backpacks are a big-ticket item that generally takes a large bite out of your back to school budget. Consider purchasing backpacks and book bags online for additional savings. Many websites offer great savings on backpacks such as eBags and School-Backpacks.com.

10. Make a master list as soon as possible and keep it with you every time you are out shopping. Merchants will advertise special savings on school supplies throughout the summer. As you run up on special savings and discounts, purchase the items and mark them off your list.

Buy what you need for the first day of school but don’t buy too much for the rest of the year. Some items, such as pencils and pens, might be useful to stock up on if there is a great sale. But since many stores overstock on items, you may actually be able to find some bargains by scanning for sales after the back to school rush is over.

World's Favorite Sport by vramak

Many freelance videographers are on the lookout for extra income or ways to expand their business. The world of sports can be an open market for the freelancer looking to cash in on a new territory. Sports videos are a great way to make extra money as a freelance videographer. There are many possiblilities for hits kind of video, including colleges, high schools and athletic leagues.

If you would like to start making sports videos, I would recommend doing a few for free. If you haven't done videos of this nature, it will enable you to practice and increase your skills for recording sporting events. If you have already shot sports videos before, shooting some for free will help you improve your skills and also build relationships with people who can help you get freelance jobs recording sporting events. To begin working as a freelance sports videographer, you will need a camera and a tripod. The camera doesn't have to be expensive, as long as it provides a good image and has a reliable source of power.

You can be a videographer for various teams and schools, or for one team. If the team's coach or director doesn't have a set fee that they pay, recommend one that you are willing to work for. You can negotiate your rate based on the number of games that you will be shooting. If you are working with various teams at any given time, you can charge a lower rate. If you are only working with one or two teams, try to secure many games to shoot. That will help to bring in more money on a consistent basis.

As a freelance videographer, you can search various places to land sports video gigs. You can begin by going to small or private colleges who may have athletic teams, but may not have steady videographers. If you are going to work with colleges, I would recommend sticking with small community colleges and other related educational institutions. Many large colleges and universities usually have teams that are part of the NCAA. In these cases, a freelance videographer is less likely to get paid recording their sporting events because cameramen from Comcast and other local television stations are already providing the school with complete coverage.

Private high schools are also a good area to look into as well as local athletic leagues that may have games throughout the entire year. It may be easier to find freelance work in certain areas of sports including football, basketball, soccer and wrestling. However, other areas shouldn't be ignored. Freelance videographers can also find work in the area of swimming and boxing.

The Ripple of the Waves.. by welshlady

Is it right to love?

Almost all of the articles I've written about the acting industry have been solely based on tips I have acquired from personal experience. While most of these articles stress the importance of certain tasks and the mechanics of being a successful artist, it is hard to articulate just how rigorous all of those tasks really are until you have actually put your feet in the water. If you have a desire to be an actor but aren't sure if this is the lifestyle for you, there are a few major realities that should be considered.

Fame: The common myth about acting is that an actor must be famous in order to be dubbed "successful". This could not be further from the truth. I have worked with many actors who make income from guest star roles, national commercials and residuals from previous bookings, all of whom live very financially comfortably. That being said, you must not get involved in this industry under the false notion that you are guaranteed stardom. This must be done for the love of the art, not the fortune and fame.

Rejection: Do you have thick skin? Before branching out into this industry, I was already tough as nails and I thought I had a pretty good grasp of how to deal with rejection. After the 10th and 20th and 30th time of being rejected, reality starts to settle in and you must cope with the fact that not every audition is going to be a winner. Acting is all about the hit-or-miss ratio and you must be prepared to have having rejection be a part of your every day life.

Jobs: Can you handle working one or more odd jobs to pay for your necessities? An actor does not book one job per every two auditions -- that is unrealistic. It can take 20 or 30 attempts before booking a job, and even that is significantly difficult to accomplish for some actors. By taking on this career, you will either need to work a very flexible day job that can easily have shifts covered or find a night job. Availability is the key to business, so your flexibility needs to be a priority.

Relocating: Many actors who read this do not live in Los Angeles where the heart of the film industry beats. Fortunately, I was born and raised in Los Angeles so not much was required of me when it came to uprooting my life. But for the rest of the aspiring actors who live out of state, you must highly consider where you plan to move, how much money you want to set aside, what kind of job you will have out here, and how you will adjust to California's economy. Carefully consider all of these questions before making your move.

Family Support: From personal experience, I cannot stress the importance of family support enough. A word of advice is to have a logical plan set out before you present the idea to your family. If you are a teenager or a young adult looking to be an actor, do all of your research and take each of your decisions very seriously. Your family will more than likely not take your choice seriously if you don't do the same. Explain why this decision is important to you, show them your wealth of knowledge, and do everything you can to sell your point. This is the beginning stages of being a good actor -- so sell it! Once you have their support, the road to success will be that much easier.

These are not the only obstacles you will face out there, but these are some of the more important ones. It is a dog-eat-dog world in the industry, so be prepared to face the harsh realities before jumping into the pool. If you cannot possibly imagine pursuing a career other than acting, make this your dream and follow it.
